A Wonderful Day

I find it almost electrifying to watch and think of this tiny literacy program. As Bob mentioned, 2 kids left today, filled with pride. Susanna and Linda have sponsored, each one child. The ones who left are the brightest of the lot. It will not be an easy jump, but Joyce had equipped them well. Bob and I each did good work today. It was brilliant (if I say so myself) to arrive prepared with lessons, ready with the equipment, work sheets etc.We met with Peter to discuss finances, and were pleased We also met with James and Molly, who were last years mentors of the Peace Club. Molly has malaria, but was working nonetheless. James is special, and I like talking to him...Last evening we had dinner with George, the son of Sophia, who runs a coop, and provides us with beads. George is articulate, bright, incisive, and the head of a small Socialist club. We turned down the invitation to meet the group. as we are here representing LOVE and our Literacy project...After work we took a "hire" downtown, to Uganda Air to get our tickets to Zanzibar. Though this is not easy work, it is overwhelmingly exciting and gratifying. Small as it is,it is a powerful tool. Thank you to family, friends and our supporters...

Your blogs get more and more positive, creative and emotional. I must sponsor a student. Please tell me how. It is all about education, right? What you are doing is so much how I believe things get done. Have you heard of the play pump project? We watched a program about how it was such a wonderful idea..Kids went on a merry go round that pumped water rather than the hand pumps..but as soon as the mechanism failed and a part was needed the village had no water..typical!!

Happy Canada Day! one place I am NOT going is parliament hill where the Queen is. Take care..Love Roz and Stan (by proxy on the golf course)

Which two children were put in regular class? Was it Charles or Shamim or Christina?
Ask Michel if he remembers the song Banana Phone.See if you can put the disc on and watch them fly ( end of the am is best) How is Provea doing in her regular class?
Love to you both. You are amazing. Doreen

I am really happy for this opportunity to follow what you are doing. It is emotional to read your entries and track the experiences of this adventure. What does it mean to sponsor a child? When I am asked how I feel about the cost of security for the recent G20 meeting in Ontario, my stock answer is "You could teach a lot of children to read with that money."

So now I have something to look forward to every day! What satsfaction you must derive from this volunteering with these children who are most fortunate to be in this program. Happy Canada Day! On this end, looks like my dad can't swallow pills anymore.
Not a good day for us.
Take care - Love Leah

Roz, Marion....Yes, it is a wonderful thing tom sponsor a child, because we know the headmaster, and trust him. The donation is made to Leave Out violence, and a tax receipt is available.I dont have the address with me,but PLEASE follow you impulse! Today we met with Godfrey, a boy from the poorest of the poor, doing well in P7, and ready for high school. We are proud to have been sponsoring him all these tears.

Judy and Bob,
Great to hear from you. I'm trying to walk in your footsteps and imagine it all. Doreen and Ellen must be hanging on every bit of information about "their" kids.
Congrats to Linda and Susanne for moving those two students to regular school.

Looking forward to more news!

Love,
Carole

Great to hear from you,Judy and Bob.

I'm following your steps in my imagination.

Must be great for Doreen and Ellen to hear about "their" kids and for you to see those you've known growing and learning.

Kudos to Linda and Susanne for sending two more on to regular school.

Keep writing.

Love,
Carole

Who is Yasin. Never heard of this child. I am sooo lonesome for the children and everything else. You found an art gallery-- wow and a shortcut--amazing. I've started to save for my next trip. It's slow going.
We had a VERY joyful long week-end. All our children, plus wives, plus fiancee, plus Gran-babies were here with us. It was extraordinary. We are so lucky.Today(5th) I spoke with a cousin of Mel's who has been to Africa. He was truly interested and listening to me. I lost track of time and talked and talked. Closed my eyes and was transported back to the project. When I got off the phone I felt the same magic I felt while I was there. It was WONDERFUL WONDERFUL
As Doreen suggested play the Raffi song Banana Phone and enjoy.
Enjoy you lucky ducks.Kisses Ellen
